Dee Lee’s journey from being a middle school teacher to the founder of an award-winning event production company is a story that inspires us all to pursue our passion.

Despite facing various challenges and setbacks along the way, Dee persevered and learned from her mistakes, which ultimately led to her success. The road has been filled with ups and downs, but she never gave up.

Dee is a first-generation Teo-Chew Cambodian woman born in the United States. Her parents escaped from the Cambodian genocide and she is the oldest of three siblings. As a daughter of immigrants, she loves to use her platform to educate, inspire, and bless it forward to her AAPI community.

Join us as we explore the challenges Dee faced and the valuable lessons she learned on her journey towards success.

FROM MIDDLE SCHOOL EDUCATOR TO EVENT PRODUCTION COMPANY OWNER

Dee was a middle school teacher in the largest school district, Los Angeles Unified, starting full-time teaching at just 23 years old. She had a talent for grant writing for the various schools she worked at. However, Dee’s pivot came when her daughters were born, and she felt unsupported.

“I was doing events and photography as a hobbyist. I quickly learned that I found a new love and pursued it part time. Eventually I retired from teaching and opened my first  LLC, got liability insurance, and the rest was history,” Dee said.

She faced a lot of challenges at first, mostly because she didn’t have enough business background to understand how to properly run a business. “Both my Bachelors and Masters were in education. I didn’t have a mentor. I learned a lot through trial and error.”

Eventually she found a network of event professionals that opened more doors for her. She started out in the Quinceañera market, where she made a name for herself as a designer in a Latino market. Although it was challenging, Dee thrived in it.

Along with the challenges she faced, she also encountered people who told her that she couldn’t make it. There was a time that she assisted a celebrity planner she admired, and was told that she was only good enough for small things. This was a devastating blow to Dee’s confidence. But despite these challenges, Dee persisted and emerged victorious. She continued to grow her business and inspire others with her journey.

MISTAKES SHE FACED ALONG THE WAY

Dee made a lot of entrepreneurial mistakes in the beginning of her journey. It was a new learning curve for her. She quickly learned why liability insurance was so important to have as a business owner, and she learned about quarterly taxes. She wanted to buy everything but she knew she shouldn’t.

“I still had a hobbyist attitude about pricing when I jumped into it full time. I didn’t know what market value was on anything and had to do a lot of research,” Dee said.

Networking was also a crucial part of her journey, as she learned the value of connecting with others in her industry and receiving valuable advice from them. Every piece of advice was like a gold nugget for her, and she took it all in. She was realistic with her expectations of growth and knew that success would not come overnight.

WHAT MOTIVATED HER DESPITE ALL HER SETBACKS

The honest truth about why Dee was so motivated and determined to succeed was the fact that she was the oldest daughter of her immigrant parents, and they thought that she was crazy to leave her profession as an educator and her two degrees. Even her cousins thought that she was just wasting her time in event planning.

She considered every mistake and situation as a learning experience, and worked tirelessly to establish herself and her business. Her goal was to become so successful that everyone would know who “Dee Lee” was.

HER CREATIVE PROCESS OF MAKING EACH EVENT UNIQUE AND PERSONAL TO EVERY CLIENT

When it comes to designing unique and personalized events for each client, Dee takes a meticulous approach. She is passionate about her work and loves the design process. She begins by sending her clients a list of discovery questions to help her gather information about their preferences and needs. She then schedules a virtual discovery call with her clients via Google Meet or Zoom, where she listens carefully to their ideas and aspirations.

Dee involves her clients in every step of the process, creating design boards together, and incorporating their personal preferences into the final product. Her approach is to make the process less transactional and more personable by humanizing the whole process.

Dee values building personal relationships with her clients, and they often embark on wedding planning and foodie adventures together. This helps her clients get to know her better, and it also enables Dee to understand her clients’ personalities and preferences. As a result, Dee is able to design events that are unique and tailored to each client’s needs.

ADVICE TO THOSE WHO WANT TO PURSUE THEIR PASSIONS AND THOSE WHO WANT TO ENTER THE EVENTS PLANNING INDUSTRY

Dee advises those who want to pursue their passions but don’t have the courage to do so to align themselves with a mentor to shadow. She emphasizes the importance of learning to do things the right way, which can be achieved by having a mentor who can guide and teach them. Dee also suggests networking and meeting new people, as it can lead to opportunities and connections in the industry.  Community is important to growth.

Dee receives a lot of emails from people who want to shadow or become a wedding planner until they see it unfold live. She acknowledges that this kind of job is not for the faint of heart.

“There is a reason it is not made for everyone and it is one of the top ten most stressful jobs. You have to know how to think on your feet, fix things on the fly, in order to survive,” Dee said.

From Rural Fields to the Edge of Space

Before he ever saw space, Pham Tuan built his career as a fighter pilot in the Vietnamese Air Force. His skill and discipline eventually led to his selection for an international space program, a rare opportunity at the height of global political tension. It was a dramatic shift from flying combat missions to preparing for a journey beyond Earth.

The transition demanded years of intense physical and technical training. He had to master new systems, adapt to life in zero gravity, and prepare for risks no one from his continent had faced before. Each step brought him closer to a milestone that would place his name in history.

Seven Days That Changed Asia’s Story

On July 23, 1980, Pham Tuan launched aboard a Soyuz spacecraft and became the first Asian to reach space. He spent seven days aboard the Salyut 6 space station, conducting scientific research and observing Earth from orbit. During that time, he captured images of Vietnam from above, offering a view of his homeland few had ever seen.

After returning to Earth, he resumed life in Hanoi with his family, carrying memories of a journey that reshaped regional history. He continues to reconnect with former crew mates and remains one of only three people of Vietnamese descent to have traveled beyond Earth’s atmosphere. Decades later, his achievement still stands as a symbol of how far determination can take someone, even from the most humble beginnings.

Princeton Engineer Luisa Zhou Left Corporate Life to Build a Million-Dollar Business on Her Own Terms

Luisa Zhou once believed that a Princeton degree and a prestigious engineering title were the ultimate markers of a secure and successful life. However, that sense of safety evaporated the moment her family faced a health crisis and she realized her “perfect” job offered no room for her to actually be there.

She learned the hard way that even a massive salary is a poor substitute for the freedom to prioritize your family during their darkest hours. That realization sparked a fire within her to stop trading her presence for a paycheck and to start building a life where she held the keys.

Engineering a Great Escape

Luisa did not leave her career on a whim because she understood that true freedom requires a foundation built on more than just hope. She spent two long years working on her consulting business during every stolen lunch break and late night while her colleagues were resting. By applying her logical engineering mind to the world of entrepreneurship, she proved that you can build a bridge to a new life without burning the one you are currently standing on.

This methodical approach allowed her to test her ideas in the real world while the safety of her corporate salary was still intact. She advocates for the slow build because it removes the desperation that often leads new founders to make short-sighted decisions for quick cash. When she finally stepped away from her desk for the last time, she was not taking a leap of faith but rather walking through a door she had already unlocked.

Redefining the Million-Dollar Life

By the time Luisa officially left the corporate world, her “side project” was already generating over a million dollars in annual revenue. Now at 36, she has designed a lifestyle where four hours of focused work allows her to sustain a million-dollar business on her own terms. Her daily schedule is no longer a list of demands from a manager but a reflection of the people and passions that she values most in the world.

The most inspiring part of her journey is the fact that her bank account is secondary to the absolute control she now has over her time. Wealth for Luisa is the quiet confidence of knowing she can close her laptop whenever a loved one needs her without seeking anyone’s permission. She has proven to the world that the most valuable thing you can ever own is the right to decide exactly how your day unfolds.

From Corporate Rejection to Global Power: The Story of Morris Chang Who Controls 90% of the World’s Advanced Chips

In 1985, Morris Chang reached a professional crossroads after being passed over for the top job at Texas Instruments. At 54 years old, he had a massive resume but felt there was nowhere left to go within the American corporate system. Instead of accepting a quiet retirement, he moved to Taiwan to build a business that addressed a major flaw in how computers were built.

This move was the first step in a journey that eventually placed him in control of the global tech supply chain. By choosing to solve a problem that many other executives ignored, he transformed a career setback into a global revolution. His transition from the United States to Taiwan set the stage for one of the most significant shifts in manufacturing history.

The Career That Nearly Ended

Back then, if you wanted to design a chip, you had to spend billions to build the factory as well. Chang realized that this massive financial requirement was slowing down progress for everyone in the industry. He envisioned a new model that would allow innovators to focus on their designs while his company handled the heavy lifting of production.

He founded TSMC in 1987 with a disruptive promise that he would manufacture chips for others but never design his own. By refusing to compete with his customers, he gained the trust of global tech giants like Nvidia. This specialized approach allowed these companies to thrive and scale without the burden of owning their own factories.

The Idea Everyone Doubted

Decades of singular focus turned Chang into the most powerful man in tech, with his factories now producing 90% of the world’s advanced semiconductors. This level of market dominance makes TSMC the essential foundation for almost every modern electronic device we use. The sheer scale of his success proves that a single, well-executed idea can reshape the entire global economy.

The importance of his work is highlighted by the fact that if his production stops, the global supply of iPhones, Teslas, and AI systems stops with it. His legacy proves that the future isn’t just built in garages by young people, but by veterans with the grit to see opportunity where others see a dead end. Morris Chang didn’t just build a successful company; he built the infrastructure that the modern world depends on every day.

How Haruka Nishimatsu Defined Modern Leadership by Cutting His Salary to $90,000 a Year to Save Jobs

In the modern corporate landscape, it is common to see executives receive massive bonuses even as their companies face financial turmoil. Haruka Nishimatsu, the former head of Japan Airlines, famously broke this cycle by putting his employees’ security before his own wealth. He recognized that a company is only as strong as the people who keep it running every day.

When the airline faced billions in debt and the threat of bankruptcy, Nishimatsu decided to slash his own salary to just $90,000. This move ensured that he was feeling the same economic pressure as the frontline workers he led. His choice was a profound statement that leadership is a responsibility to others rather than a path to personal enrichment.

Leading by Example Through Shared Sacrifice

Nishimatsu discarded the traditional perks of his high-ranking position to remain grounded with his workforce. He traded a private limousine for the city bus and waited in line for lunch at the staff cafeteria.

These daily actions removed the social distance that typically separates a CEO from the rest of the office. By working at a regular desk in an open-plan room, he made himself accessible to everyone in the building.

Prioritizing People Over Short-Term Profits

During the 2009 financial crisis, Nishimatsu refused to use mass layoffs as a quick fix for the company’s rising debt. He understood that protecting the livelihoods of his staff was more important than protecting the executive payroll.

This commitment to job security built a deep sense of trust and loyalty throughout the entire organization. His strategy proved that a business can navigate a crisis without ever abandoning its moral compass.

The True Source of Professional Respect

Nishimatsu demonstrated that real authority is earned through character and shared experience rather than a fancy title. He did not need a corner office or a massive paycheck to command the respect of his pilots and flight attendants.

His influence came from the fact that he stood right beside them when the company was struggling. This style of leadership serves as a timeless reminder of what it means to be a true steward of a brand.
